How to Hang Artwork Like a Pro: Tips for Large & Small Pieces
Share
The way you hang your art can make as much of an impact as the art itself. Whether you’re displaying a statement-making canvas or a small, intimate print, the right placement, spacing, and presentation will help your piece feel at home in your space.
Here’s how to get it right, every time.
1. Find the Right Height
For most walls, center your artwork, so the middle is 57–60 inches from the floor — roughly eye level. This creates a natural, balanced view.
Above furniture? Keep the bottom of the artwork 4–8 inches above the top of the sofa, console, or headboard for a connected, intentional look.
2. Scale to Your Space
Large Art: Works beautifully as a single focal point. Make sure it fills at least 60% of the wall or furniture width for balance.
Small Art: Group pieces into a gallery wall or pair them for impact. When alone, small works shine on narrower walls or in more intimate spaces like hallways or reading corners.
3. Use the Right Hardware
Heavy, large-scale pieces deserve heavy-duty hardware — use wall anchors, screws into studs, or professional hanging systems. For smaller works, nails or adhesive hooks can work if weight allows. Always check the weight limit of your hardware.
4. Keep it Level (Always)
A slightly crooked piece can ruin the look. Use a bubble level or a laser level to keep lines crisp. For multiple pieces, measure equal spacing between frames for a clean, gallery-like feel.
5. Consider Lighting
Art comes alive under the right light. Use picture lights, track lighting, or nearby lamps to add warmth and highlight texture. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time.
6. Give Your Art Room to Breathe
Leave a bit of space between your art and other visual elements (like windows or door frames). Crowding makes even the most beautiful piece feel cramped.
7. Trust Your Eye
Guidelines help, but your home isn’t a museum — it’s a reflection of you. Step back after hanging and see how it feels. If it makes you smile every time you pass it, you’ve got it right
Final Thought
At Golf Art Studios, we believe art should be more than decoration — it’s a connection to what you love. Hung thoughtfully, your piece will not only look beautiful, it will feel like it belongs.
